On Thursday morning, Last Generation activists temporarily brought air traffic at Germany’s largest airport in Frankfurt to a complete standstill as part of international protests against fossil fuels.

As a result, around 140 flights were canceled, with more disruptions expected throughout the day, according to airport operator Fraport.
Similar actions occurred on Wednesday at Cologne/Bonn Airport in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and at London Heathrow Airport in England, as well as in Norway, Spain, and Finland. The climate activists are urging governments to commit to completely phasing out fossil fuels by 2030.
“Fossil fuels are driving us towards climate collapse. We have already passed 1.5C of global heating and are expected to pass 2C in the 2030s. This spells disaster for human societies globally,” the Last Generation said.
“Without an emergency plan to cut fossil fuel use we face: floods, droughts, and wildfires like we have never seen before, crops will fail, billions of people will be exposed to unlivable conditions, hundreds of millions will face starvation and ultimately death,” it added.
“As citizens of wealthy developed countries we are aware that our nations bear the greatest responsibility for the climate crisis, but none are taking on their fair share of the global effort to reduce carbon emissions,” the Last Generation pointed out
At the end of April, the Group of Seven countries, including Germany, agreed for the first time on a common time frame for the complete phase-out of coal, aiming for implementation by the mid-2030s.
Last week, the German government decided to tighten the penalties for obstructing air traffic, which still has to be approved by the parliament. Instead of a fine, climate activists will face up to two years in prison for such actions.
